How to Spot Uneven Tire Wear

With the vehicle parked safely and the tires cool, look across each tire’s tread and both visible sidewalls. Uneven wear may show as a more worn shoulder, a smooth patch, or a pattern that differs between tires. Check tread depth using a suitable gauge or have a tire shop measure it. Look for cuts, bulges, exposed cords, or embedded objects, and do not drive on a visibly unsafe tire.

Wear patterns can be influenced by inflation, alignment, suspension condition, driving habits, tire rotation history, and road conditions. One visual clue does not identify the cause with certainty. If wear is concentrated on one edge, tires are wearing at different rates, or the car pulls to one side, arrange a professional inspection rather than simply fitting new tires.

Follow the vehicle maker’s guidance for tire rotation and pressure, since rotation patterns differ by drivetrain, tire type, and whether the tires are directional or staggered. Correcting an underlying issue before replacing tires can help prevent repeat wear. Keep a record of measurements and dates; gradual changes are easier to identify when you compare them over time.
