What Your Dashboard Warning Lights Mean

Dashboard symbols differ between vehicles, so keep the owner’s manual available and learn the warnings for your model. Many cars briefly illuminate several lights when the ignition is switched on; this can be part of a system check. A light that remains on, flashes, or appears with a message deserves attention. Color can offer a clue, but the manual is the reliable guide.

Some warnings require you to stop as soon as it is safe. An oil pressure warning, a serious overheating alert, or a brake-system warning can indicate a condition that risks damage or safe control. Do not continue simply because the car still seems to run normally. Move out of traffic safely, switch off if instructed, and arrange appropriate assistance rather than guessing at a repair.

Other alerts may allow a careful trip to a service facility, but they should not be ignored. Note when the warning appeared, whether it is steady or flashing, and any change in how the vehicle behaves. Photographing a message can help a technician. Avoid clearing warnings by disconnecting the battery or using an unfamiliar tool; diagnosis should begin with the cause, not just the light.
